It literally took us 15 minutes to make it all, from getting to the kitchen, washing your hands, being on your phone for a bit until you then feel like starting to cook.

Our dad used to tell us lots of stories, some really good, some not so much, but he´s good at it. There was one story in particular that used to peak my interest as a little girl, I don´t even know if it was real or not, but he would swear it was real. It was about a boy, a friend of a friend (as usual) that only ate sandwiches. Yes, anywhere he would order a sandwich, if he was invited over to someone else´s house to eat he would ask for a sandwich, in spite of how weird it may seem. And I would always ask -Dad, but what type of sandwich did he eat?-, and the answer was always the same -loaf bread with ham and cheese sandwich-. But then I used to think that if this boy made different types of sandwiches each time, it did not have to be as boring right?.

The truth is there are lots of types of sandwiches, just as tacos, you just put to slices of bread together with something inside and that´s it, voilá, you have a sandwich. But a good sandwich is not easy to get… a good sandwich has to be made with love and with the same eagerness you make a complicated dish. A good sandwich to start off has to have good ingredients, just as any other dish.

I have many memories of when I went to the movies with my family, it is 6 of us so it was a big family. My parents usually eat really healthy, balanced food so they tried to avoid buying things in the movie theater, maybe some pop corn. Instead of that my mon used to take loaf bread sandwiches with ham and cheese… that´s it, and it was glorious but we actually weren´t supposed to bring food.

Anyways, after talking a lot about sandwiches and loaf bread, we give you here our croque monsieur sandwich, made with love.

Ingredients

For the bechamel sauce:

  • 1 C whole milk
  • 1 oz (30 gr) unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all purpouse flour
  • 1 pinch nutmeg ground
  • Salt to taste

For the sandwiches:

  • 4 slices bread brioche type
  • 3.5 oz (100 gr) melting cheese grated
  • 4 slices york ham
  • Mustard to taste

Instructions

For the bechamel sauce:

  • Place a pot on the stove to medium heat. Add the flour and butter and mix with a hand whisk until the butter melts and it all comes together. Cook and stir for 3 minutes for the flour to cook.

  • Add the milk little by little stiring non stop for it to thicken.

  • Add in the nutmeg, season with salt and cook for 1 minute more until you get a soft sauce. Remove from the heat and let it cool down.

For the sandwiches:

  • Preheat the oven to 375ºF (180ºC). Place the bread slices in a baking sheet and bake for 2 minutes on each side for it to dry a little and it does not soften when adding the bechamel sauce.

  • Once out of the oven, spread some mustard on the slices of bread and then spread some bechamel sauce on them.

  • Spread about 3/4 of all the cheese between the bread slices and then place a york ham slice on top of each bread.

  • Pair each slice with another to assemble the sandwiches and add some more bechamel sauce on top of both sandwiches, and the remaining cheese. Put the sandwiches again on the baking sheet and put them in the oven again with the roast feature, or heat from the top for 5 minutes and they´re ready!.
