A staggering 85 percent of us currently dye our hair, either at home or in the salon, according to research carried out by Garnier. Which means that it’s essential (in the beauty world, at least) to learn all about the latest hair color trends. From Bambi blonde to cowboy copper and everything in between, Vogue breaks down some of the hottest fall hair colors to try now, with help from industry experts.

Jet brunette

James Devaney

Jet brunette is a “really deep, dark, noir brunette,” says Nicola Clarke, creative director at John Frieda Salons, whose clients include Kate Moss, Cate Blanchett and Madonna. “It’s dark at the roots, and then the mid-lengths and ends feature pieces of a flatter, ashier brunette, two or three shades lighter than the root.” She uses a permanent color then layers a glazing formula over the top, meaning the hue is super shiny and lasts longer.

Celebrity colourist Jenna Perry named “cowboy copper” as her fall hair color obsession–everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to Adwoa Aboah has recently sported the look. “Coppers are always popular at this time of year, as the leaves start to turn,” says David Inman, senior colourist at George Northwood, who adds that copper shades with muted violet undertones are especially good. “Adding a warmer gloss over brunette is also a great way to tap into the trend, and imparts a perfect shimmer as the light catches the hair.”

Espresso brunette

Karwai Tang

Autumn was made for beautiful brunette shades, and colorist Kadi Lee (also known as Highbrow Hippie on Instagram), is a dab hand at achieving them. Counting Julia Roberts and the duch*ess of Sussex as clients, Lee recently created a rich espresso brunette for Meghan Markle before the Invictus games. “I have a soft spot for beautiful brunette hair color,” she says. “It requires a gentle touch when adding colour, plus depending on the season it can look deep and striking, or glossy and regal.” For the duch*ess, she deployed a selection of low-lights through the lengths, then used a gloss to add depth and glossy shine.

Bambi blonde is a perfect color for autumn and winter, says Clarke, who references Kate Moss and her daughter Lila as great examples of the look. “Their hair goes a natural fawn hue in the sun,” she explains. “I add creamy babylights, concentrating on the top of the head and sides, then dust a couple of vanilla pieces on the ends to give it sparkle.”

According to Google Trends, searches for “warm caramel hair color” have gone up by 200 percent in the last 30 days, which makes it one of falls biggest hair colors. “For so long there was too much emphasis placed on cold, ashy and silvery slate tones in the hair, which can often drain the complexion,” says Paddy McDougall, colorist at The Hair Bros. “Now there is a real movement towards embracing the hair’s natural warmth, which creates a more organic, sun-kissed feeling rather than anything that feels too forced.” Warm caramel tones are the ultimate antidote to ashy hues.

“Amber and rose hair colors are trending–anything that’s a variation on red,” says Emilie Riant Passelande, lead colorist at the Christophe Robin salon in Paris. Some of her go-to shades include rose-blonde, amber (think golden undertones, reminiscent of the amber gem stone) and chocolate rose, a “rich chocolate brown with subtle rose highlights.” All of them, she says, are warm and can work on all skin tones, making them an incredible choice for anybody chasing a new fall hair color.

It’s not only the colors that matter this season, but the placement of autumn’s must-have hair hues and the techniques used to apply them, says McDougall. “Blocky, color-heavy looks are being quickly discarded in favor of more aesthetically pleasing, multi-dimensional, hand-painted results.” Painting the hair in a way that’s “bespoke” means the natural texture and cut of the hair can be effortlessly enhanced and made to look dimensional, without being obvious. “Hair color now is about the finer details, the nuance, and the overall aesthetic,” he confirms.
