CARLISLE, Pa. —

The Cumberland County district attorney has ruled a deadly police shooting as justified.

At a Wednesday morning news conference, District Attorney Sean M. McCormack said the person who was fatally shot, Nathaniel Liberator, was trying to stab a Carlisle police officer with a sharpened deer antler before another officer shot him twice, killing him.

McCormack shared several images from police body cameras showing the confrontation. You can see those and watch the full news conference below.

Deadly shooting

Nathaniel Liberator was shot and killed by police on Jan. 13 after an altercation outside what was once George's Flower Shop.

Liberator was charged last September with simple assault, trespass and harassment.

He was free on bail when he was shot. His case was pending in the court system.

Events leading up to shooting

McCormack said the officers involved in the shooting had been following Liberator across several blocks and private properties after he made threats at a home in the borough.

The officers repeatedly told Liberator he was being detained, then tried to stop him by grabbing his arms.

The district attorney said Liberator fought with the officers, causing him and one of the officers to fall to the ground.

As the struggle continued, McCormack said, Liberator used a sharpened deer antler to try to stab one of the officers multiple times.

The second officer then fired two shots at Liberator, according to McCormack.

"Where the actor believes that force, in this case deadly force, is necessary for the purpose of protecting himself, or others, against the use of unlawful force by such other person, or persons, then the force is justified," McCormack said. "In this case, the force Nathaniel Liberator was using against the officers was the type that was intended to cause death or serious bodily injury to the patrol supervisor. Therefore, the Patrol Officer was justified in using deadly force to prevent the death or serious bodily injury to his law enforcement partner."
